African Development Bank

As part of its 2011 Annual Review, the African Development Bank worked with AidData to pinpoint the locations of all of its projects approved from 2009-2010. Building upon the Development Loop platform, AidData and Esri prepared an interactive mapping demonstration to view the AfDB’s projects in Morocco, Cameroon, and Tanzania. With this tool, users can filter projects by multiple criteria, generate reports on activities in a selected area, and export the resulting data to a variety of formats, allowing them to mash up these locations with geospatial data from other sources.

The mapping platform allows users to interact with not only the map, but the underlying data as well. In addition to the three-country map package including African Development Bank locations, plus poverty, malnutrition, and infant mortality in Cameroon, Morocco, and Tanzania, the app has several advanced features. Data in the map can be filtered based on any criteria, and even by highlighting an area on the map – users can then download the data based on their selections, to investigate the AfDB’s activities using other tools or analytical methods.

This step-by-step scenario explains how users can download data from the app, based on an area highlighted on the map. First, launching the app shows a continental view, with the AfDB activities and socioeconomic indicators in Cameroon, Morocco, and Tanzania.

Zooming in to the country level, projects can also be viewed using a high-res "heat map" that shows the intensity of aid activities in local areas.

After opening the attribute table to view all of the projects, users can highlight a specific area within the country to select the activities located in that area.

Using the export feature, the selected records can be opened in Excel or CSV, allowing the user to analyze the data through other programs.
