Leonardo Arriola is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for African Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He studies democratization, ethnic politics, and political violence with a focus on African countries. His current research examines how electoral violence affects multiparty competition, power sharing, and state repression. He has conducted field research in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, and Senegal. He has previously been a visiting scholar at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame, a Fulbright scholar at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University, and a visiting researcher at the West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal.
