Tracking Underreported Financial Flows (TUFF) Internship, Energy Transition Minerals — Winter 2023

The Tracking Underreported Financial Flows (TUFF) team is looking to hire Research Assistants (RAs) to work on a project funded by the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, which focuses on China's role in the clean energy transition related to critical mineral extraction in developing countries. As their primary responsibility, RAs will review and summarize the literature related to the clean energy transition and critical mineral extraction; the associated ESG risks, mitigation measures, and impacts; and the role of China and other financiers in this space.

Students from all backgrounds are welcome to apply to the internship. We prefer—but do not require—that applicants have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Established subject-matter interest (clean energy transition, critical minerals, ESG issues related to mineral extraction, Chinese financing and deal structures in this sphere, etc.),
  • Experience with writing literature reviews
  • Experience contributing to qualitative research projects
  • Technical scientific knowledge related to critical minerals (or another subject matter that would have transferrable knowledge).

Research Assistants (RAs) are expected to work from November 2023 to January 2024, with possibilities to continue work on an as-needed basis after January. During the academic semester, RAs are expected to work for 10 hours per week. During the winter break, they are expected to work 30 hours per week. The starting pay rate is $12 per hour. All interns must be based in the U.S. near the William & Mary campus to be hired into paid positions. This internship will be primarily remote, but we may hold a few check-in meetings in-person at the Global Research Institute throughout the duration of the internship.
