Communications Intern - Copy Editing & Blog Writing
AidData’s Partnerships and Communications (PComms) team is hiring a communications intern for summer 2022, with the possibility of continuation into the fall and spring semesters. The communications intern will split their time between (1) blog writing and (2) copy editing, depending on internal project schedules. The communications intern will play a key role in assisting the PComms team with (1) drafting and editing blog posts and news releases about the lab’s research and (2) copy-editing reports, policy briefs, and other written assets. The communications intern will have the opportunity to learn about multiple innovative research streams in international development. AidData’s reports and news releases are regularly cited by media including the New York Times, BBC, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, and AidData staff frequently brief policymakers, including officials at the US Treasury, White House, World Bank, and IMF, on its reports and research.

AidData is located at William & Mary’s Global Research Institute in Williamsburg, VA, but this position can be fully remote or hybrid remote/in-office. Important: For employees new to William & Mary's payroll, HR requires I-9s to be processed in person; the candidate must be able to come to Williamsburg, VA to complete their I-9. The communications intern will report to AidData’s Communications Specialist. Starting pay is $12/hr. The intern is expected to work ~20 hours per week over the summer, with a start date in mid June.
Responsibilities
- Writing and editing articles about the lab’s research to be featured in AidData’s blog or other outlets
- Translating research analyses into compelling stories
- Proofreading copy to fix grammatical, spelling, punctuation and formatting errors
- Maintaining adherence to style guides
- Editing copy to improve readability and clarity
Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong command of English language and grammar
- Prior writing and copy-editing experience, preferably with academic writing and knowledge of APA style
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Pages
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Organized and deadline-oriented mindset
