Nepal Water Initiative — Undergraduate Research Assistants (Spring 2024)
AidData, a dynamic research lab housed at the Global Research Institute (GRI) at William & Mary, is excited to invite applications from talented undergraduates for two positions in the Spring 2024 semester. As part of the team, you will contribute to the Nepal Water Initiative, which is dedicated to addressing critical environmental and climate change issues in Nepal. Under the guidance of post-doctoral researcher Dr. Sara Sayedi, you will contribute to research and gain valuable experience in environmental data analysis.
Responsibilities:
- Review various resources, including peer-reviewed literature and other relevant products, to identify those containing data applicable to Nepal
- Learn and compare methodologies used in different studies, potentially creating step-by-step methods based on various methodologies and their respective pros and cons for relevant research questions (e.g., floodplain degradation assessment, soil erosion risk assessment)
- Extract Nepal-specific data from global datasets and perform analysis
- Collaborate in the analysis of spatial data using remote sensing and GIS techniques
- Explore real world applications such as mapping land use changes, assessing flood risk, or monitoring soil erosion, etc.
- Participate in fieldwork in Nepal in May following the conclusion of the Spring semester
- Optionally, present research findings at a conference during Summer
Qualifications:
- A strong interest in environmental research and a demonstrated ability to interpret papers from scientific peer-reviewed literature
- Some experience in programming with Python and R
- Completed fundamental courses in remote sensing
- Ideally, a junior status (third-year undergraduate)
This position offers flexible hours and competitive compensation at $16 per hour, with the potential for contract renewal for the Summer/Fall 2024 and Spring/Summer 2025 terms.
