Policy Analysis Unit — Research Assistantships (Spring 2024)

AidData is looking to hire research assistants for Spring 2024 to work on data collection and communication management for a number of ongoing projects in the Policy Analysis Unit. Research Assistants will play a key role in conducting research on foreign influence, public diplomacy, and public perceptions in the context of Russia, China, and their spheres of influence. Research Assistants will have the opportunity to learn novel research methods, utilize foreign language skills, and assist in various facets of data collection.

We are currently hiring for three projects:

Listening to Leaders (LTL): AidData's Listening to Leaders program collects 360-degree feedback on development priorities, progress, and performance from the perspective of leaders in low- and middle-income countries. Research assistants on the LTL team contribute to projects by conducting research on the sampling frame and identifying the names, positions, and contact information of leaders working in government. They also often perform special tasks—everything from assessing the social networks of ministers and MPs across the world to checking translations and developing innovative new search tactics for the team. Check out our webpage for past reports and datasets.

Aptima: The Aptima project is focused on designing a platform for migration researchers to connect and share data. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a migration forecaster, so that impacted regions can better prepare themselves for migration flows when disaster strikes. This project presents an interesting blend of technical expertise and policy knowledge. Research Assistants working with this team will be assisting in fielding a survey of potential users of this platform to assess what they would want out of this tool.

Foreign Policy Influence (FPI): Research Assistants for the Foreign Policy Influence team will play a key role in conducting research on public diplomacy and public perceptions in the context of Latin America. Research Assistants will analyze foreign media sources to identify diplomatic overtures, themes, and the tone of opinions in a variety of contexts. Research Assistants will have the opportunity to learn novel research methods, utilize foreign language skills, and assist in various facets of data collection. Check out their webpage for more information.

Preferred Qualifications:

For all projects, students who can demonstrate a strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and motivation are encouraged to apply. Students from all backgrounds and schools at William & Mary are welcome to apply.

Important: For student employees new to William & Mary's payroll, HR requires I-9s to be processed in person; the candidate must be able to come to Williamsburg, VA to complete their I-9. All research assistants must be based in the U.S. to be hired into paid positions. These positions begin in January 2024 and are expected to work approximately 10 hours a week, depending on the project. Starting pay is $12.5/hour.
