Student Research Assistant: Migration and Policy Research on Afghan Migrants
Are you interested in migration, immigration policy, or refugee resettlement? Are you considering a career in law, policy, or international development? Join our interdisciplinary research team examining the integration of Afghan migrants in the United States through the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program and other visa regimes.
We are hiring two paid undergraduate or graduate research assistants to support qualitative and quantitative research activities over a 12-month period. You will be part of a collaborative team involving faculty from Economics, Sociology, Law, and AidData at William & Mary.
This is a paid position at $15/hr, with an expected commitment of 10 hours per week starting June 2025.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with literature reviews, background research, and data organization
- Support qualitative data collection and analysis, including interviews and focus groups
- Contribute to survey development, outreach to stakeholders, and data analysis
- Co-author or assist in drafting policy briefs, blog posts, and public-facing communications
- Participate in regular team meetings, research presentations, and professional development opportunities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong interest in migration studies, immigration policy, or refugee issues
- Demonstrated commitment to research, public policy, or pre-law pathways
- Background in economics, sociology, government, law, or related fields
- Pashto or Dari language skills preferred but not required
- Strong writing, organization, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma (e.g., peer support, helplines, mentoring, or community outreach) is a plus but not required. Training will be provided, and sensitivity and empathy are more important than formal credentials.
