Abstract
Over the last two decades, China has consistently directed high levels of official financing for energy projects across the developing world. But how does Beijing finance energy projects—and renewable energy in particular—in the Indo-Pacific, one of the world’s most populous and consequential regions? In this brief, we analyze the scope and nature of China’s investments in the energy sectors of 24 countries across the Indo-Pacific, tracking $106.6 billion in grants and loans. We provide an overview of historical trends and key take-aways for an informed understanding of how China’s energy financing strategy in the Indo-Pacific has evolved—and where it may go next.
