Abstract
This country profile of Tajikistan provides a detailed overview of the scale, scope, and composition of Chinese state-directed financing to Tajikistan between 2000 and 2022. It includes granular information on key trends in China’s loan and grant-financed commitments, its lending portfolio, ESG risks in its infrastructure projects, and contractual safeguards adoption and implementation.
Between 2000 and 2022, China has directed $6.4 billion in loan and grant-financed commitments and 168 projects to the Republic of Tajikistan. Chinese development finance in Tajikistan peaked in 2006, when China provided more than $1.5 billion in grant- and loan-financing to Tajikistan, with most of these funds directed towards the 500 kV North-South power transmission line project and the first stage of the Dushanbe-Khujand-Chanak road construction project.
