Event Description

Where has Beijing directed overseas financing for ports and related maritime infrastructure—and to what end?

Join AidData for an engaging panel discussion at the W&M Washington Center in DC from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM on March 11th, as we share findings from our new report, Anchoring Global Ambitions, and an associated dataset. Our analysis provides the clearest picture yet of Beijing's global ports portfolio, tracking nearly $24 billion in Chinese state-directed grants and loans for projects at 168 ports in 90 countries, reaching nearly every corner of the world.

We'll explore China's shifting maritime strategy; recent Chinese naval developments and related activities at ports; and implications for the U.S. and its allies, regional powers, and port-hosting countries.

Lead report author Alex Wooley will moderate a discussion between report co-authors Lea Thome and Rory Fedorochko and external experts including William Henagan, Research Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relation's (CFR), Amb. Geoffrey Pyatt, Senior Managing Director of the Energy and Critical Minerals practice at McLarty Associates and US Ambassador to Greece (2016-2022), and Paul Nantulya, Research Associate at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies. Light refreshments will be provided.
