Policy Specialist (SDI)

AidData is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Policy Specialist, based in Williamsburg, VA. The position will lead a wide variety of projects in AidData's Sustainable Development Intelligence (SDI) program, and offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting edge applied research with an aim impact on the decision making of major policy stakeholders across the Global South. Major potential focus areas include global health, extractives industries, vulnerable populations and operationalizing sustainable development goals at the domestic level. Position will be responsible for: 1) improving uptake of AidData’s data and research by the policy and development community through research summaries, policy briefs, articles, and blog posts; 2) leading and managing projects/engagements with a multitude of stakeholders/partners; and 3) collaborating on new research proposals, project design, implementation and monitoring, data management, report writing and dissemination and policy outreach.

This position is located at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. This is a full-time position, and salary is commensurate with experience up to $50,000.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related field
  • 2-4 years of experience delivering high quality policy research and/or policy outreach outputs.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English
  • Flexible, self-motivating, detail-oriented, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, a team player
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organization.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a demanding and complex work environment, to carry out assignments in a timely manner, and to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Strong and effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of researchers, clients, partners, data users, and staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, public health, or related field
  • Experience generating written content (various forms) for a policy audience
  • Experience conducting research on global health, Extractives Industries, Global Development Agendas, or vulnerable populations (migrants, persons with disabilities, women & girls, indigenous)
  • Familiarity with contemporary development issues, major actors, etc.
  • Willingness to travel abroad, at times on short notice
  • Previous experience leading international development research in a project and client management capacity preferred.
  • Knowledge of Stata, R, ArcGIS, QGIS
